About Destiny Church Newcastle

Who's going?

Students, singles, couples and kids - people from all walks of life are coming along. As we grow we are starting to see the diversity of Newcastle’s vibrant city life reflected in a multifaceted, multi-cultural church - Why not come and see if this is for you?

What’s your plan?

Growth is top of God’s agenda, and we aim to fill this venue and spread out using the Metro line as the connecting link to build multiple meetings across the region. There are 53 Metro Stations - we eventually want to see a church or group meeting at each one, plus a network fanning out along the bus routes. We want to grow big and grow small - so people have great personal connections but also can come together and enjoy large celebrations.

What are you into?

We are part of a Destiny network of churches: www.destiny-church.com. There is also a weekly Housegroup for people to meet up, find friends and help from the Bible. There are also great social events to tap into ....

What is the history of Destiny Church Newcastle?

We are part of a Destiny network of churches: www.destiny-church.com headed up by Andrew & Sue Owen. God stirred Tim and Allison to plant a new Destiny Church, and Andrew invited them to seek God. They arrived in the Summer of 2007 along with friends Paul and Joanne Foden, where Tim began working as a Lecturer in a Young Offender’s Prison. There he met a fellow lecturer Graeme, who had become a Christian through reading the Bible and searching for God. When out playing snooker that night with Billy, a good friend, Graeme remarked that “this guy has just started at work who has moved down from Scotland to start a church. “My mum’s going to want to meet him”, said Billy, “She’s been praying for years for someone to come from Scotland and start a church in Newcastle”.

As soon as Graeme got home his phone rang - it was Billy’s mother, Lilly. She wanted to know all about it and came round the next evening to meet Tim and Allison. “When are you starting this church?” She asked, “You’d better hurry up because I want to come to it.”

Tim and Allison, Paul and Joanne went into Newcastle City Centre that week to look for premises. The church had not even started; there was no budget, so they started praying. They went into a Coffee shop to see if there was a basement or upstairs room the church could use on a Sunday. The manager said no, he had tried to get planning permission, but rather he wrote a list of all the Coffee shops in Newcastle that did have available rooms, as he had checked them all out! The 1st shop on the list was Costa Coffee Grey Street, and the manager there was delighted, as long as everyone bought a drink, to give the venue for free.

On 16th September 2007, Destiny Church Newcastle began to meet. Fourteen people turned up that day, including someone that Alex just invited off the street. The meeting grew, but as Christmas approached the cafe grew increasingly noisy and the church also wanted to introduce some music to the meeting.

The Church moved to the Holy Jesus Hospital for several months. We prayed for musicians but none were forthcoming, so Michael learned the guitar with Alex putting into practice skills she learnt leading worship in Kid’s Rock in Glasgow.

More people were added, and so the church moved to a cafe in Eldon Leisure centre in May 2008. This was a mixed blessing, as it was an open plan onto an indoor bowling green. This meant that sometimes the preaching was accompanied by the clink of bowls or the head moving distraction of table tennis. After prayer, Tim went to see the manager, who said, “You aren’t happy are you?” “No”; “You want a better room don’t you?” “Yes”; “You don’t want to pay any more money do you?” “No”. The manager took him to the Main Function Suite, which had recently been renovated. He said, “We watched the way you treated the room we gave you, how you controlled the kids, always left it clean and tidy - that’s why we want to give you this room.”

That is where we are today, with a great space and facilities. We hired an additional Gym Hall, so the kids have a great area to play and learn, during the “adults’ bit” of the meeting. Graeme now drives a hired minibus, with a group of people from the West of the city and others with cars doing all they can to help people come along, and others coming by the bus or metro. The great thing about the city centre venue is it is only one ride from anywhere around the city.

Tim and Allison took the decision, in consultation with Andrew Owen, to go full time in April 2009, which has been a big step of faith and another exciting chapter on our journey. We have great links with Scotland, joining all the Destiny Churches there for the monthly celebration called “1st Sunday”, on the 1st Sunday of each month. Missy joined the full time team, also living by faith in January 2010, in a 6 month placement. Who knows where you can fit in - come and find your destiny and make some history!

What can I expect if I come to a Destiny Church meeting?

It's an action packed time with looking at what the Bible says about how to live life to the full, with the opportunity to go or socialise at the end.

We like to catch up on what people have been up to as they arrive and then enjoy some singing with our resident band. Its always a lively time with the words on screen so you can hum or sing along depending on how you feel. We celebrate people’s birthdays, show the slideshows of what’s been happening and people throw in comments, questions and a bit of general mayhem as we work towards what God has to say to us. If you want a formal or religious meeting you may find us quite relaxed! The preaching is rooted in the Bible but lived in the 21st Century. People enjoy chatting afterwards, but you don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to. In practice, we find people who come with no intension of joining in, can’t help but be caught up in the great atmosphere and enjoy a tea or coffee afterwards. Some recent comments have included:

“Its so friendly”

“These are some of the warmest people I’ve ever met”

“I never thought it would be this fun”

“When I tell my friends I went to church on Sunday they can’t believe it and said ‘I didn’t think you were a church kind of person.’ But I just really enjoy coming.”

There is an opportunity for individual prayer at the end of each meeting, and we have seen God heal and help people, sometimes in dramatic ways.

If you’ve got kids they’ll love the music and then have a time together to give the adults space to enjoy “their bit” of the meeting in a great gym hall where they can let off steam, before all coming together at the end. If you need to go with your kids to help them “settle in” and make sure they’re comfortable, that’s fine.

People will often want to “do lunch” afterwards, go explore some culture in the city, or maybe catch some Sunday afternoon football.....

What are people saying?

Here’s some recent feedback- how people have found Destiny Church:

Hi, thank you for introducing me the great community. I was happy to have
a worship service with you. Have a great week! I will see you next
Sunday! -Sunyoung

"I truly enjoyed bible study, thank you for welcoming me into your group. It was truly a blessing and I will try hard to make it again". -Irene

“Hi Tim, thank you so much for the warm welcome yesterday at Destiny Newcastle.
It was a great morning and the atmosphere really buzzed with family life!

Your message about goals really hit me and God spoke to me through what you had to say”. -Emma (First Time Visitor)

“Good morning Tim. Thank you for your message, and MP3 file”.
-Hugh (Hugh and his wife who have subsequently come to the church and become members)

“Hi Tim, thank you for sharing your message”.
-Linda (website)

“Ben and I were discussing the last Alpha (Course) meeting last night and I thought that you may appreciate having some feedback on the course. I'm a great believer in honesty rather than just discussing things afterwards and leaving it. Firstly, thank you very much for accepting us and welcoming us into your home. It was lovely to turn up and have dinner with such a diverse community and feel like part of a bigger family in some ways. Thank you for the lifts, the food, the coffees .... I can see how much you want to help people and want them to experience God's love, grace and the Spirit as you two appear to have done.
The actual course at first was very good and I particularly gained a lot from going through things that I had heard long ago and hearing it afresh and seeing it anew”.
-Sarah

“Hi Tim and Ali. Thank you for dinner (Alpha), it was lovely to meet you all properly, hope to see you all soon”.
-Charlie

Just sending a quick note to encourage you. I don't have any idea what God is up to in Newcastle, but it must be wonderful. I live in Canada and have only visited your city twice in my life, last in May'09. While we were there, the Holy Spirit pressed on me the whole time, and I was acutely aware of His presence and brooding with anticipation.... I KNOW Holy Spirit is in the UK and He desperatley wants to move in an out-pouring on your nation. So, finally, because of the persisting nature of Holy Spirit, I spent the day searching Newcastle Churches on the web. I found you guys, your page is seriously cool. I love your photo gallery.  I would love to get to know you people some day. (ABBA/Queen!) It is evident that you love one another. I also joined your facebook page, I hope that's ok...” -Kelly and family, Canada

“Great website!! Tim, you and your family are in our prayers. You have stepped out of the boat, now Jesus will do the rest. God Bless”.
